Background and Facts
From 1987 to 1991 I studied Graphics and Painting with an emphasis on Printmaking at the Academy of fine Arts Vienna with Prof. Maximilian Melcher. From 1993 to 1997 I lived in Japan. As recipient of the Mombugakusho scholarship, I spent one year as research student in Yokohama and Tokyo. In 1997 I graduated with an MFA from the Tokyo University of the Arts, where I studied with Prof. Tetsuya Noda.
In my art work, I enjoy to use various techniques of printmaking (art intended to be published) and draw inspiration from the Asian as well as the European tradition.
In 2005 I received the Theodor Körner Award for research on: „Polymer print and Computer Aided Printmaking“. In the same year I started to collaborate with the musicians Prof. Gunter Schneider and Barbara Romen in the development of the performance concept „Klopfzeichen“, an attempt to create a syn-aesthetic experience for musicians and printmakers. The concept has been realized with various combinations of participants in Austria and Japan.
In 2004 I had the honor to be the only European Artist in the show of the Nagoya City Art Museum „100 Years of Japanese Woodblock print“.
I have been a member of the faculty of Webster University since 2003 and spent a semester as guest professor in St. Louis in 2005.
From 1997 to 2004 I was staff writer for the „Wiener Kunsthefte“, since 2005 I am staff writer for „UM:DRUCK“, an art magazine published in Vienna specialized in Printmaking and Visual Culture. I am co-founder and co-editor of „IM:PRINT“, a peer-reviewed international academic magazine with the same focus as its sister-publication that we plan to publish in 2010 for the first time.
During my career I had to overstep the boundaries of the traditional working area of the artist and found myself working as curator, project manager, exhibition designer, critic and art theorist. I share this experience with many artists of my generation as it has become common practice in contemporary art and I am therefore convinced, that education in the field of art must reflect this trend.
