Background and Facts

My interest in film and photography began as a student at the University of Arkansas where I was introduced to these media within the art department curriculum. At this time I was also employed as an ice house worker, flat tire fixer, gas station attendant, lumber mill worker, and as a brakeman on Missouri Pacific Railroad in Arkansas, Texas, and Tennessee. Upon graduation, I made a transition to Memphis and became the assistant of the internationally celebrated artist and photographer, William J. Eggleston. In addition I worked as assistant to commercial photographers, and became head of the titling and graphics department of MPL (Motion Pictures Laboratories).
My teaching experience began later as an instructor of photography at the Memphis College of Art. This was an extremely rewarding experience as my students and I learned quite a lot from each other. During this period, I formed a musical group known as the Panther Burns which is named after a legendary plantation in Mississippi. Further I began taking assignments as a videographer in Memphis and in New Orleans. Then I relocated to New York, and two years later I moved to Paris for four years. The exposure in Paris heightened my sensibility and associations with the international community of artists and writers there.

Now as an American I feel somehow at home in Vienna, in this endlessly fascinating capitol of middle Europe. Coming to teach at Webster is an ongoing, stimulating challenge within the fertile and dynamic atmosphere of a small, personal American university. Again my students and I are learning from each other, and it is a privilege to be here.
