The talk “My Journey from Evil to Heroism” by Dr. Philip Zimbardo on the 31st of May in Vienna can be summarized in one word; “Inspirational”. We were taken on a fascinating journey filled with examples of Dr. Zimbardo’s research as well as examples from events of the past where ordinary people have done evil things. Gruesome photos of the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse in Iraq where shown, but Zimbardo managed to give the audience hope and trust in humanity.

Phineas Gage was an American railway construction foreman who in 1848, at the age of 25, sustained an accident in the performance of his duties, whereby the tamping iron he was working with penetrated his left cheek and exited through the top of his head. Gage survived the terrible accident, however with serious consequences to the most advanced part of the brain – the frontal lobes: he underwent radical personality changes resulting in a complete loss of appropriate social behavior.
