PSYC2750 Introduction to Measurement and Statistics
Introduction to Measurement and Statistics is a required course for psychology majors and designed to introduce students to basic statistical concepts in the psychological and social sciences. Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing and interpreting numerical data and is designed to aid the student in learning how to “make sense” of a body of numbers.
Statistics plays an extremely important and indeed necessary role in many aspects of psychology and science, one of which constitutes the field of empirical research: here, the use of descriptive statistics is to summarize research results, and the use of inferential statistics to draw conclusions. Therefore, being statistically literate enables students to understand research findings and make sensible decisions based on the analysis of numerical information. Understanding numerical data is not only important in academic life, but in everyday life as well.
