PSYC3550 History, Philosophy, and Systems of Psychology

The course is an overview of the history of psychology and aims at exploring its roots from the origins in philosophy, physics, physiology, and other disciplines and intellectual traditions to the development of the subject matter, problems, and methodology of contemporary psychology. Students will be taken on a journey through the past 2500 years of philosophical and psychological thoughts, starting with Ancient Greeks and arriving at contemporary psychological issues.

At the end of the course, students are expected to have a basic knowledge about the history of psychology; the ability to reflect and discuss philosophical ideas and psychological systems, and to apply ancient psychological theories to contemporary issues.

Prerequisite: PSYC 1100, PSYC 2825, and 6 credit hours of psychology, or permission of the instructor.
