PSYC4300 Health Psychology
This course provides a broad introduction into the psychological, physiological, environmental, and cultural factors that are involved in health, disease, and prevention. It further explores the manifold work areas – such as hospitals and rehabilitation centres - in which health psychologists are active.
Objectives that are pursued by health psychologists include the following: to assist patients adjust to a life with a serious or chronic illness; to support patients after surviving a traumatic medical emergency; to prepare patients psychologically for major operations; to assist patients in making positive health related changes (i.e. diet, smoking cessation, exercise); and to provide additional support for patients with a psychological disorder who are experiencing health challenges.
Prerequisite: PSYC 1100 and 12 credit hours of psychology, or permission of the instructor.
