The Thomas K. Lang Gallery at Webster University Vienna is an environment where students, faculty, and visitors can experience art as an integral part of their daily activities. The Gallery, which is located in the Graduate and Professional Development Center, is in a central location where graduate courses and professional seminars are conducted and special lecture programs are scheduled. This brings individuals who normally do not visit museums or commercial art galleries into contact with art that they might not otherwise encounter. The Gallery aims to challenge and to inform.
The Thomas K. Lang Gallery functions as a resource for Webster University Viennas Art students. Five exhibitions are scheduled each academic year and whenever possible, exhibitions are keyed to courses offered during the year. The Gallery also offers student interns an opportunity to obtain practical knowledge concerning the development and production of art exhibitions. ARTSPEAK programs featuring exhibiting artists as well as other guests from the local and international arts communities are held in the Gallery.
The Gallery is named after Thomas K. Lang, chair of the Art Department on the main campus in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. Professor Lang was instrumental in the establishment of an art program on the Vienna campus. He initiated a yearly study abroad program which brought St. Louis students and faculty to the Vienna campus. This exchange has resulted in the establishment of ties with European artists and the Austrian art community and led to the development of the Webster University Vienna art major with an emphasis in Visual Culture.
