Father Georg Sporschill awarded with Honorary Doctorate
Father Sporschill received doctoral Honors from Webster University for his exceptional, life-long social work, supporting orphans and street children in Easter Europe. The Doctorate was bestowed on Father Sporschill at the Vienna-Graduation on May 16, through Campus Director Dr. Arthur Hirsh. Father Sporschill also gave this year’s graduation address.
|
"The wise men and sages of all cultures throughout
human history have all come to the same conclusion – that true
success in life and true human happiness comes from gratitude
for our good fortune; and giving to others, especially helping
those less fortunate than ourselves.
At some deep level, we all know this. But as imperfect human
beings, it is not so easy for us to live this every day.
Our Graduation Speaker, Father Georg Sporschill,
however, does live it every day – and for this we are
recognizing him with an Honorary Doctoral Degree."

Vienna - The World’s best place to live
Vienna was recently named the “World’s best place to live 2009” in Mercer's annual Quality of Living Survey. Vienna, which has appeared among the top four cities for the last three years, surpassed 2008 winner Zurich to take the top spot in 2009. Switzerland has other Quality of Living Survey winners; Geneva, home to Webster University Geneva’s campus, retained its top three ranking, placing third in 2009.
The quality-of-living survey covers 215 cities and is conducted to help governments and major companies place employees on international assignments. The survey also identifies those cities with the highest personal safety ranking based on internal stability, crime, effectiveness of law enforcement, and relationships with other countries.

Webster Professor researching at MIT as Fulbright Professor
Webster University Vienna Research Professor and Psychology Department Head Thomas Oberlechner spends the Spring/Summer 2009 term at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as a Fulbright Professor and as a visiting scholar at the Sloan School of Management. His research in the US explores the importance of psychology in (un)ethical decision-making in financial markets.
|
For his new research in the US, Oberlechner will be in close contact with top financial players at Wall Street. His project Psychological Dynamics in Ethical and Unethical Decision-Making in Financial Markets promises a better understanding of why and when people and organizations in financial markets engage in ethical behavior, and why and when they do not. As the current economic and financial crisis shows, these questions lie at the very heart of financial markets, and of people’s trust in these markets -- and they are deeply psychological.

A group of entrepreneurial Webster students have formed a company based on leveraging the relationships among the businesses and organizations in the Webster network. |
|
VIA Group is a recently established business intermediation and consulting group that is run by Webster graduating students. Webster Vienna will provide them with office space and infrastructure on campus and supports them in their start-up activities. Here is their own self-description:
VIA – in the gateway
Vienna is as a gateway between the East and the West, a city of international organizations’ headquarters, a touching point for developed and developing potential markets such as the Middle East and South Eastern Europe. Sitting in their meeting room VIA explains how its team wants to take on the opportunities that arise in such a diverse environment. |

VIA Group
www.via-group.com
|
“We realize that there are many organizations that have “know how” but lack “know who”, Darko Gacov, one of the three young partners of VIA explained. “VIA is there to give you this “know who”, leading clients to the potential best business connection.”
Taking it one step further
“Depth versus width” –says one of the headings in the ready made company brochure. “This means that we at VIA are prepared to look for the one partner for you that makes the best possible fit- a true connection that is so much more than a list of telephone numbers or email addresses,” Marlon Jünemann, VIA partner, explained. “It is the foremost concern of VIA to establish bilateral trustworthy business partnerships,” he added. A look at the business model shows: VIA process steps are structured to give an in depth insight into the partner’s profile. Another point becomes clear: Consulting and business intermediation are supporting branches in this company. “This enables us to consult the client not only on whom to connect with but also on how to guide the processes and how to draft suitable business models, pointing out possible roadblocks and opportunities,” Hossein Nabavi, the third in the round of three partners said.
Building bridges
The multicultural team, with members from Iran, Macedonia, Germany, Romania, Sweden, aims at focusing on building cultural bridges, turning differences into advantages. At the moment VIA works together with General Motors Austria in Vienna on an ongoing and dynamic basis.
