Prof. Dr. Armin Kammel, LLM (London), MBA (CLU) is Associate Professor of Comparative International Business Law and the inaugural Head of the Department of Law at Webster Vienna Private University. He has been pursuing a dual-track career in both academia and practice and currently serves aside his academic affiliations as Of Counsel with DLA Piper Austria and Managing Director of FS&R Excellence GmbH (in cooperation with DLA Piper Austria).
His research areas are interdisciplinary and cover both legal and economic/finance topics. In law, his primary research activities are in both international and comparative business law, banking law, financial regulation and securities law with a special focus on investment fund law. International economic law and corporate law are also part of his research agenda. In economics/finance, his primary research activities are covering financial markets, investment management, risk management, corporate finance and the economic analysis of law.
Kammel has authored more than 140 publications ranging from monographies and co-authored books to articles in academic journals and conference proceedings. He collaborates extensively with firms and institutions in various industries with a focus on financial market participants. Kammel is also a sworn and court-certified expert in the areas of credit, banks and exchanges (Allgemein beeideter und gerichtlich zertifizierter Sachverständiger).
In addition, he is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the interdisciplinary Research Perspectives series on “International Banking and Securities Law” with BRILL Publishing, Co-Editor of the commentaries on “BWG und CRR” (Austrian Banking Act and CRR), on “Bankensanierungs- und -abwicklungsgesetz (BaSAG)” (Austrian Bank Recovery and Resolution Act) and on “Immobilieninvestmentfondsgesetz (ImmoInvFG)” (Austrian Real Estate Investment Funds Act) with Verlag Manz, as well as Co-Editor of the book series on “Vertragsrecht | Vertragsgestaltung” (contract law | contract design) with facultas Verlag in Austria.
Kammel has roughly 20 years of experience in financial services regulatory advisory business and as executive in the financial services industry, having worked as Head of Legal and International Affairs with the Austrian Association of Investment Fund Management Companies (VÖIG) and having served on the Board of Directors of both the International Investment Funds Association (IIFA) and the European Fund and Asset Management Association (EFAMA). Kammel also served as Deputy Chairman of the IIFA until October 2020.
He has been Professor of Banking Law and Securities Regulation at Lauder Business School (LBS), Vienna, Austria and Ehrenprofessor (Honorary Professor), Faculty Member, as well as Program Coordinator (LLM/MLS in International Banking Law and Capital Markets) at Danube University Krems (DUK), Austria. Kammel also serves as the Executive Director of the Joseph von Sonnenfels Center at WVPU. Kammel holds an Adjunct Professorship at California Lutheran University (CLU) in the U.S., and has been a visiting professor at numerous prestigious institutions in Austria, Bulgaria, Israel, Switzerland, the U.K., Ukraine, the U.S. and Thailand.
